Let go of what you think you know

Let go of what you think you know

I first came across this illustration by David Plant in 2014 at a time when I was starting a new leadership role. The role was new in that it was at a new location with a new team, however I had previously held a similar position within the company and aspects of the job would remain the same.

This was an essential mantra as it allowed space for me to connect with the team and role from a place of curiosity and compassion. The alternative would have been to assume I knew the best way of doing things and that what had worked well with one team and operation would do so here in the new place.

As an operator I have an eye for detail and logical approach when it comes to process and I quickly spot risks and areas for improvement. These are all great qualities of an operations bod but the real skill is in letting these things go initially. Letting go so that you have space to inquire and understand - timing is everything in a new role.

I am often reminded of this illustration - seeing it in my mind as it is drawn here.

It’s helpful to me when my ego comes knocking - when I’m hosting a webinar or workshop; when I’m talking about something I feel passionate about; when i’m creating; when I’m setting goals or solving problems.

As a coach I help clients to let go, to imagine and look beyond current limitations or beliefs. To open and find the threads of possibility and momentum.

Letting go of what you think you know invites growth, connection, innovation and awareness. The ego gets in the way of these things.

Forever grateful for the illustration :)
