We need to boost Paternity Leave
I’m so in awe of Joeli Brearly and the team at Pregnant Then Screwed., what a bunch of legends. Here is their latest announcement on Paternity Leave in the UK.
What we know:
Paternity leave in the UK is scabby as hell. The statutory entitlement to paternity leave is two weeks and the weekly rate for paternity pay is £172 a week, which is a meagre 44% of the national living wage. This means some people can’t even take it because they can’t afford to. It’s also ridiculously short with the statutory entitlement only being two weeks of paternity leave, we don’t know about you but we think that's completely pants!
What we want:
The government to increase the length of non-transferable paternity leave to a minimum of six weeks and pay it at 90% of income, just like the first 6 weeks of statutory maternity pay. We also want paternity leave to be available to all working dads and partners, regardless of length of service in their role.
And for those of you who are thinking “This is all well and good but what about us mums? Statutory maternity pay is rubbish too!”. We totally agree, more to come on this shortly.
