Hospitality professionals are highly skilled and an asset to all organisations

Hospitality makes up 10% of the UK workforce with many people beginning their working lives in the industry.  The environment provides an opportunity to build essential life and people skills such as compassion and communication.  Some of those who excel often stick around, choosing careers aligned with values such as service, variety, freedom, growth, and challenge.

It’s a people business and leaders in hospitality are highly skilled at connecting and building relationships, thinking on their feet, motivating teams, and remaining calm and positive in a crisis.  They’re curious and driven with an eye for detail and an ability to identify trends, adapt, and innovate quickly.

Working in hospitality shapes phenomenal teams and leaders.  They have a level of passion and commitment to serving others that is remarkable, whether that’s their customers, teams, or communities.

Whilst each leader is unique I notice a common set of strengths among those I work with that appear fundamental to their success.  Here are just 3:

Would you agree?  What strengths do you think are fundamental to hospitality leadership?

  1. Detail orientation - perceptive and skilled at scanning the environment and noticing the little things, the nuances in behaviours, the opportunities to enhance service and performance.  Hospitality bods notice everything!

  2. Flexibility - the ability to adapt quickly, to change course at the drop of a hat, and remain positive whilst doing so.  Accepting situations as they arise, being present and skilled at making decisions that consider the impact on all stakeholders.  2020 has called on this strength more than ever.

  3. Compassion - the ability to see and feel through the eyes of others and the desire to help.  Helping customers to have a wonderful experience, helping teams to thrive and individuals to grow.  Careers in hospitality are accessible and rewarding, they nurture the qualities of community and family.

It's no secret that times are tough for the industry right now, but hospitality and service sector professionals have talents that are much needed in other spaces and would be an asset to many organizations and industries.
